Sarah McCafferty

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Sarah now lives in Baltimore, Maryland with her husband and their three children.

Sarah is researching the McCafferty, Cleary, Earner, Mooney, DuRoss, McElwee, Gallaher, Haggerty and Donohoe families in Wilmington.

Robert McCafferty was born in Glasgow, Scotland of Irish parents around 1831. He appears to have lived in the Philadelphia and Lancaster, Pennsylvania areas before settling in Wilmington in the 1860’s. His wife, Elizabeth Cleary, was born in Tullamore, County Offaly (King’s), Ireland and was living in Philadelphia by the early 1850’s. Their children married into the Earner (maternal line: Mooney), Tucker, McNee and Brinton families in Wilmington.

Bernard DuRoss was born in Ireland in the early 1830’s. Although he is listed as living in Wilmington in the 1860 Census, his family appears to have lived in the Ashland, Delaware and Southern Pennsylvania areas as well. He was the father of a large family by his first wife, Mary McDermott, who died at a young age, and his second wife, Catherine McElwee, who was born in Wilmington of Irish parents in 1849. Catherine’s mother’s maiden name was Gallaher.

One of Bernard and Catherine’s sons, Daniel, married Anna Haggerty, whose mother was Margaret Donohoe, born in County Tyrone, Ireland, and whose father was Patrick Haggerty, born in County Donegal, Ireland.

Wilmington’s Irish Roots has provided invaluable genealogical information regarding these families. Sarah would be interested in hearing from anyone who may be researching any of the families noted above. She can be reached here.
