The Descendants of Thomas Hannon

Joseph Michael Lalley [1.1.4b.8] created two ancestral descendent charts for his mother's lineage, one for his Hannon (Hanna, Hannan, Hannin) ancestors and the other for his Hart (Harte) ancestors. The two charts, although lacking dates and names of places, have proven invaluable documents in the search for his ancestral home. Research, substantially aided by a fortunate find of a 10 December 1857 letter from John Hart to his brother Edward, has documented that the ancestral home of Edward Hart, his paternal grandfather to be the townland Luggawannia, Cargin Parish in north County Galway, Ireland. [1] Since Edward married Bridget Hannon in Ireland, it is reasonable to suppose that Mr. Lalley's Hannon ancestors lived nearby. Indeed, it now seems quite likely that she was born in the adjacent townland of Carrownacroagh. Unfortunately, records that could prove or disprove this assertion are not available.

The family history report below utilizes the information found in both of the Hart and Hannon JML descendant charts and is augmented by findings in church and civil records that have also verified much of the information contained the two charts.

There are three successive generations of men named Thomas Hannon on the JML Hannon Descendant Chart. Thomas who married Bride Egan c. 1780; Thomas who married Honor Lee ca. 1810; and Thomas, born in 1788, who married Mary Craven.

1.1.2  Michael Hannin

Birth:                                     ca 1820

The J. M. Lalley Descendant chart lists the children of Thomas Hannon and Honor Lee: Thomas who married Mary Craven, Michael about whom nothing else is shown on this chart, Bridget who married Edward Hart in Ireland and emigrated to Wilmington, Delaware in 1848 , Margaret who may have emigrated to Wilmington, and Mary who married D. McHugh and whose daughter Hannah who married Alexander Butler in Wilmington.

Griffith's 1855 Valuation of Tenements for Killursa Parish record that a Michael Hannin leased a house and land from Dominick O'Flaherty in the townland of Carrownacroagh.  Moreover, these records show that a Daniel McHugh, who was very likely the brother-in-law of Michael who married his sister Mary, also lived in Carrownacroagh.  It is entirely possible, therefore, that the Michael Hannin of Carrownacroagh, was the son of Thomas Hannon and Mary Lee.  Unfortunately, civil and church records that could determine precisely where the descendants of Thomas Hannon and Bride Egan lived have been lost or destroyed.

Michael Hannin's descendants are listed below.

Child:                                    John (ca. 1840-)

1.1.3 Thomas Hannon

Birth:                                     CA 1820 [14]

Children:                                Owen (1837-1882), Patrick (ca 1840-), James (1857-1883), Anne

Buried in the same plot in the Cathedral Cemetery are Thomas Hannon (b.15 Sep 1788 - d. 15 Sep 1875), Mary Hannon (b. 26 Feb 1820 - d.1 Mar 1888), Owen (b. 8 Oct 1837 - d.21 May 1882), and James Hannon (B. 3 Aug 1856-1883).  If Thomas was the husband of Mary, then he was thirty-two years older than his wife Mary.  His son, James, would have been born when he was sixty-eight and his daughter, Anne, when he was eighty-one!  Mary would have been about thirty-seven when James was born and forty when Anne was born.

Perhaps Mary Craven was the stepdaughter of Thomas Hannon and Mary Lee.

Mary Hannan probably was a baptismal sponsor for Patrick Lally, Jr., son of Patrick Lally and Ellen Flynn.[18]

1.1.3a Owen Hannan

Birth:                                     8 Feb 1837 [19]

Religion:                                Roman Catholic

Occupation:                            Carriage Driver [20]

Death:                                    22 May 1882, Wilmington, DE [21]

According the 1880 US Census, Owen was forty years old at the time.  An Owen Hannon signed a marriage bond on 10 July 1874 to marry Bridget Karr.  The next day the couple were married in St. Paul Church, Delaware City, Delaware by Rev. Peter Donaghy.  John Hannan and Margaret Hannan were witnesses.  The St. Paul Marriage Register, however, erroneously lists the bride's name as Margaret Hannan. [22]  His death certificate indicates that an Owen Hannon was married at time of his death in 1882 but 1880 census states he was single.

Although the above picture was labeled Owen Hannon, it is not known whether this picture is a photograph of the Owen Hannon who may have married Bridget Karr. It was, however, found among other pictures of the Hart and Lalley families taken during the same time period.

1.1.4b.5 Julia Hart Lalley

By all accounts, Michael and Annie's Lalley's daughter, Julia was a much beloved and remarkable person. Although he seldom spoke of his parents, his brothers or his sisters, Joseph her youngest brother, remembered her fondly. During the Great Depression, she wrote two warm and kind letters to his wife, Spalding. In one she praised her for her good care of those "lovely and sturdy young boys" and mentioned that her nephew who she cared for was about to start high school. By this time she had moved into the home of her brother Francis (Frank) to care of his three young sons after their mother died while giving birth to another boy. In another letter written a week before Christmas in 1932, she concluded, "This will be a meager Christmas for most everyone but, if we have our health and the will to fight, things are bound to come out right."

At age twenty, she was employed as a telephone operator for the Insurance Company of North America. In time she became the chief switchboard supervisor of the company's telephone operations throughout the United States.  Although she never married, she had many friends. Throughout her life, she maintained close ties with most of her relatives. In later years she traveled extensively with many friends of her youth.

Birth:                                     after 1888, Philadelphia, PA.

Death:                                    before 1900

Agnes is listed on descendant's chart compiled by J M Lalley. No other records for her have been yet found. She was probably born still born or at birth between 1888 and 1894. She is not listed as living on 1900 US Census but the census does show that two children in this family died before 1900. Mary was one of them. Since all other siblings are listed as living on that census, Agnes must be the second child who died before 1900.

Joseph M. Lalley was born while is parents were living at 2048 South 18th Street in South Philadelphia. He played semipro baseball in his youth and was very knowledgeable about the game. After attending St. Joseph College, he began writing for the Philadelphia Press and continued until 1917 when he was called to active duty. He served in Troop G of the First Pennsylvania Cavalry and in Battery A of the 108th Field Artillery while stationed at Camp Hancock, Augusta, Georgia. Following his discharge, he became the Washington correspondent for the Philadelphia North American and later a reporter for the Philadelphia Ledger. Subsequently, he received an assignment with the Baltimore Sun where he met his wife M. Spalding Parker, a librarian for the Sun. Several years afterwards he became vice president of a New York advertising firm. After the financial crash in 1931, he and his family returned to Baltimore where he worked briefly as a reporter for the Baltimore News American.

At the invitation of Felix Morley, then editor of the Washington Post, Mr. Lalley became a member of that paper's editorial staff. His unique Christmas editorials attracted considerable attention for many years. He was also editor of the Sunday book review page for the Post and wrote a weekly column called "Posting the Books". During his career he contributed occasional articles to such magazines as the New Yorker and the neo-conservative monthly magazine Modern Age. After his retirement from the Post, he became an associate editor of Modern Age.

His large book collection was donated to the special collections' section of the John Hopkins University Library, which is also the repository of his manuscripts, editorials, book reviews, and correspondence.

The Spalding family genealogy is recorded in the book, Thomas Jenkins of Maryland 1670, His Descendants and Allied Families, compiled by Rev. Edward Felix Jenkins, OSA.  M. Spalding Parker Lalley completed considerable genealogy research for the Spalding family and her efforts were recognized by Father Jenkins. Spalding, as she called herself, was a long-time member of the Maryland Historical Society.

Thomas Jenkins emigrated from England to Charles County, Maryland in 1660 or 1670.  It is unclear where and when he married his wife Ann Spalding. An seventh generation, direct descendant of Thomas and Ann Jenkins, Spalding Parker Lalley was the sixth and youngest child of Naomi Bernadine Spalding (b.9 March 1856 - d. 28 January 1902) and Edward Gregory Parker (b.3 October 1846 - 1 July 1905) of Rochester, New York.

Father:             Edward Gregory Parker (1846-1905)

Mother:           Naomi (Noma) Bernadine Spalding (1856-1902)

Religion:          Roman Catholic

Death:             12 Jan 1891

Burial:             16 Jan 1991

                      Thomas Lea (1928-2007)

                      Stephen Fenwick (1930-1990)

                      Richard Plowden (1931-)

                      Anne Hart (1935-)

Until recently, very little was known about the Parker side of her family.  In 2007, however, Aleda Bunch, great granddaughter of Samuel W. Parker, published the results of her extensive and pains-taking research, Parker Family History.

Born in Liverpool, England, Samuel W. Parker (b. 26 Sep 1810 Ð 22 Mar 1885) and his younger brother Joseph Parker (ca 1813 Ð 30 Dec 1871) belong to the first known generation of this Parker family.   Samuel W. Parker married Maria Cluguet who bore him ten children: John T. (b. ca 1834- d. aft 1920), Joseph H. (b. Apr 1838), Jane (b. Jan 1840- d. aft 1900), Mary (b. ca 1842 16 Dec 1888), Edward Gregory (b.3 Oct 1843 - d. 1 Jul 1905), Margaret (b. ca 1846), Susanna (b. May 1847 - 26 Sep 1934), Julia (b. ca 1847 - d. aft 1870), Katie (b. ca 1845), and Samuel (b. Dec 1857 - d. aft 1900).

Samuel Parker was the head of an interesting theatrical family.  His six daughters were actresses.  His son Samuel was a musician before settling down as a clock maker. His brother Joseph was both an actor and a scene painter and the father of two well-known actresses, Josephine Parker Bishop and Julia Parker Polk as well as the father of Seymour Parker, an actor who later became a noted scene painter.   [26]

One of the sons of Samuel W. Parker and Maria Cluguet, Edward Gregory Parker, married Naomi Bernadine Spalding (b. 9 Mar 1856 - d. 28 Jan 1902).  Edward owned a Baltimore, Maryland insurance brokerage. The couple had six children one of whom was Margaret Spalding Parker. She was called by all who knew her "Spalding."

When Spalding was a young child, her mother Ð "Noma," as she preferred to be called rather than "Naomi" - died of cancer in 1902. Spalding believed that her father died of a broken heart, though his obituary lists the cause of death as acute rheumatism following a heart attack. Less than eleven years old when her father died, she spent much of her teenage years year-round at Mount Saint Agnes, a boarding school for girls in Baltimore.

Two older children (Edward Carroll, b. 26 Aug 1877 - d. 18 Sep 1877) and Beulah Marie (Beulah Marie Parker, b. 15 Aug 1878), died in infancy. Her brother, Herbert Jerome (b. 25 Jan 1880 - d. 25 Jul 1945), is said to have worked on the Panama Canal where he became ill with yellow fever. Later he married Elizabeth Neville, the nurse who had cared for him. They lived out their days in California.  Spalding Parker Lalley also had two sisters who were also considerably older than she.  Beulah Helena Parker (b.18 Dec.1881 - d.10 Jul 1982) married George F. Sloan.   Marie Randall Parker (b. 8 Oct. 1882 -   d. 15 Sep. 1964) married Frank Snowden Ehlen

Death:                                    17 Apr 1862 of bronchitis at 803 East 5th Street home [104]

Julia is found on the JML Hart Descendant Chart.   Her parents' names are not shown on her death certificate nor on the cemetery record but the address on the death certificate is that of Edward and Bridget Hart in 1862.

1.1.5 Margaret Hannan

Birth:                                     ca 1850 [105]

Married:                                 19 May 1880 [106]

Witnesses:                              James Phillips and Anna Phillips

Spouse:                                  Francis Roony of Baltimore, MD

Father:                                   Thomas Roony

Margaret is listed on the JML Hannon Descendant Chart.  It is unclear whether the twenty-one year old Margaret Hanna living with James, Owen, and Annie Hannan on the 1870 US Census for Wilmington is the same person.  If not, then she is very probably closely related to this Hannon family.  The 1880 census lists a thirty year old Margaret Grooney, - likely a misspelling of Rooney -- living in the household of Mary Hannan and some of her children. She was the wife of a Frank Grooney, a molder.

1.1.6 Owen Hannan

Birth:                                     ca. 1843[107]

Owen is listed on JML Hannon Descendant Chart with notation that he died a bachelor. Two men named Owen Hannon both twenty years of age are recorded as lived in the home of Patrick and Mary Hanna in the 1870 US Census. One was a coachman and the other a laborer.  Other members of the household were:  Patrick Hanna, twenty-five year old boilermaker; Margaret Hanna, twenty-one; Anna Hanna, sixteen; a laborer named James Lally; and a hired servant Lizzie Hannegan.
